The Banks Development Company: News is Building! June 2014
Thrilled by authenticity, originality and sustainability, we treasure each house we build.
The outside of a house is as important as the interior: driveway, gates, terraces, windows and doors should be in harmony with the architecture of the building.
For the above house, we first applied a 4" thick rigid insulating board to the exterior wood framing. This extra dimension of depth can be seen at each window and door opening. The exterior is clad in brick and its massing is grounded by a water table at its base. Masons purposefully produced sloppy, protruding mortar joints to create an uneven surface. We then added 4 layers of lime wash mixed with ground iron oxide. Large, tilt-turn mahogany windows by MQ were hand-bleached on site to give a sun worn look. The result is a sublime, aged patina with depth.
We shape our buildings. Thereafter, they shape us. -Winston Churchill
